October is here

To kick off October we had a lesson on following directions, doing single-task and multi-task, tasks. Each student made an origami bat. We now have a very spooky classroom.
Our class had a contest to see who could pick up the most trash around the school...Way to go Colby Gillies for filling up his bag. Mr. Richards rewarded us with candy bars.
We finished up our unit on micro organisms and had a mold bread contest. Our Mr. Moldy Universe was Brady, our runners-up Dannie and Maizi.

Literacy:
We had an end of unit vocabulary test last Friday...we did great, we played all sorts of vocabulary games to prepare. Vocabulary helps us all to become better writers and readers and have a good conversation with anyone. We will take a Spelling test on Friday (unit 7). Many of our class has already shared some amazing stories during Author's Chair, we are learning how to figure out context clues in reading, make connections and write about our reading. This week we will learn how to better revise a story and had more exciting verbs and adjectives.

Math:
WOW...may I say again...WOW...our class did fabulous on our end of unit math test for algebraic expressions and orders of operations. SHOUT OUT! We are now beginning a unit on decimals, some will be review and some will be new.

Science:
We will take an end of unit test in science on Micro organisms and then move on to the 3 types of Heat Transfer. We will spend a couple of weeks on Heat. I am trying to help our students become better comprehensive science readers, this is one of the hardest parts of test taking. If there is anything at home you can do to help your student read about and talk about any kind of science that would be great...Practice always helps.

Social Studies:
We finished up our Early Civ. Unit and have begun learning about Egypt. We talked about the class system. Some of your students were in the upper class, some lower, and some were Pharaoh, I am sure that being Pharaoh and being in the upper class were more enjoyable as the rest of the classes had to share the greater part of their earnings(skittles) with the others. We are making Egyptian travel pamphlets and will soon have an Egyptian Day.

Once again...what a fantabulous class we have, we are going to start a jar were we fill it up with acts of kindness (it comes natural to my class-thanks to their awesome families and help from home).
